Hidden benefits of Home Education

I was watching Mr9 learning today and was struck but yet another hidden benefit of Home Education. He woke up and started his lessons on his own today and has been cracking on for going on 3 hours now with very little assistance from me. The reason why he is doing this is because he wants to take tomorrow off and has decided to build up enough overtime to do this. He did not plan this with me or ask me to figure out how he can do this. He has done the math and the planning himself. He is 9 years old and I know a lot of adults that still battle with this basic process in life. As most know it is the school holidays, being Home Educators, school holidays or terms really have no meaning to us as learning is a way of life and not tick box. We use a learning method that encourages Mr9 to manage his own time in order to create a balance between work, learning, feeling of accomplishment and recreational time. Being in recruitment for many years I noticed that so many people lacked these basic tools to function in society and the workplace, which is quite awful considering we pile huge amounts of useless information into our children's heads throughout their school life only to leave them lacking in the basic understanding of how the real world works. A great example is how we spoon feed students all throughout their school life and yet when we employ a young adult we complain about how they lack the ability to think for themselves and constantly need supervision and direction. Doh! I wonder why?! Watching Mr9 today has inspired me to let other parents know that although most schools fail dismally in teaching children how to manage their time, balance their lives and make decisions, it is not all lost. You can and must take this upon yourself to teach your children. This will definitely give them an advantage that their peers will not have when living in the real adult world. It is never too early or late to start...but do start. It is always easier to let some else make decisions for you but if you teach a child how to move through the decision-making process, how to plan his/her time, how to create their own goals and how to balance work and play. Be honest, as an adult, you would pay money for a lesson like that...lol...so what are you waiting for? Go out there and teach your children, you do not need a degree to teach your child. No one knows or loves your child better than you, that makes you the highest qualified person to teach your child. Just remember to have fun and enjoy the process. Life is not a chore it is a journey
